First time for everything :-)
This band has inspired me more than you know, so I am a bit biased ;-)
I am so glad I finally had a chance to see Diamond Jubilee live as a fan for well over 25 years now. The lighting rig was incredible, and did its own dance during the show like a graceful marionette. I also feel the 'catwalk' could have been used more. Despite their ages (hey shut up you're 36) they had all the energy I expected and then some. I'll settle for the smoke machines and blaring orange lights any time! Dave Gahan was bursting with energy - spinning around and belting it out like he hasn't aged since "Music For The Masses". The crowd was encouraged to sing along (but please people, get the words right). Martin Gore punished his sweet collection of guitars with his usual grace. Andy Fletcher was quite reserved and business-like as per usual, and shared his many keyboard duties with Peter Gordeno. Several people I know that went would have liked to hear MORE GORE, yet "Hole To Feed" was truly phenomenal. From where I sat/stood, I felt it could have been louder and that the keyboards could have had more presence in the mix. Rear projections were, well, at times distracting and at other times amazing. Very nice to hear some of the classics from their vast library nonetheless. As many will agree, nobody owns the stage like him. Christian Eigner definitely handled it with tremendous precision and expression. So glad that Dave Gahan was back in shape, some of my European friends really missed out due to his bladder surgery and calf muscle tear. It was a bit of a change to hear some of the more classic tracks being played by a live drummer. I was in the next to last row all the way up top but did not care because I could see the whole stage (slightly obstructed by some speakers and crossbars). Despite their ages, he did need the time off and was bursting with energy - spinning around and belting it out like he hasn't aged since "Music For The Masses".
